I find myself singing this classic on cross-country trips as we drive through the diversity of the purple mountains and the fruited plain. Katherine Lee Bates wrote these moving words in 1893 while teaching summer school in the Rocky Mountains. In the first line of each verse, she paints a descriptive portrait of our land and its people. In the final statement of each verse, a prayer is offered for Gods grace, healing and refining touch on America.
